š„ Releasing the Flame in Initiative

There was a version of me who waited.
Waited to be picked.
Waited to be noticed.
Waited for good things to happen.
Growing up, I was that shy little girl who stood in the shadows.
Quiet. Observing.
Hoping someone else would move first.
And honestly? I got really good at waiting.
But good things rarely knock on the door of someone who never reaches for the handle. (And sometimes the door isnāt locked ..we just never turn it.)
The Shift That Marked Me
Years ago, I heard a quote that rearranged something inside me:
āGrab life by the horns and make it work for you.ā
At first, I didnāt love it.
It didnāt feel empowering.
It felt aggressive.
But the more I sat with it, the more I realized ..
it wasnāt about force.
It was about initiative.
I can still remember the first times I stepped out.
Spoke up.
Raised my hand.
Said yes when I would have normally stayed quiet.
My heart would pound out of my chest.
But I felt alive.
Those bold moments began to stir the things God had already placed inside of me.
They started breaking the mold that had quietly been built around me.
Little by little, I shifted.
From the girl who waitedā¦
to the woman who initiates.
And let me tell you ⦠that shift didnāt happen overnight.
It happened decision by decision.
(No fireworks. Just faithfulness.)
Thereās Fire in Initiative
I use the word fire on purpose.
Because fire does something.
Fire warms.
Fire illuminates.
Fire shifts atmosphere.
When the fire of God touches a life, it radiates outward.
And when it touches a home?
It creates warmth.
Not hype.
Not noise.
Warmth.
The kind that makes people exhale when they walk through your door.
The kind that softens tension.
The kind that keeps hearts open instead of guarded.
Fire doesnāt just burn.
It releases warmth.
And warmth changes people.
So when we talk about initiative, weāre not just talking about productivity.
Weāre talking about partnering with the warmth of God.
And if youāve ever walked into a room and immediately felt peace ⦠that wasnāt dĆ©cor. That was atmosphere.
š„ What Is the Fire?
Let me be clear about something.
When I say fire, Iām not talking about chaos.
Iām not talking about volume.
Iām not talking about emotional hype.
Iām talking about the fire of God.
The fire that purifies.
The fire that refines.
The fire that burns away pride and releases humility.
The fire that awakens love.
The fire that carries conviction without condemnation.
Fire in Scripture was never random.
It marked altars.
It signaled presence.
It consumed sacrifice.
It ignited calling.
The fire of God is His active presence ā¦alive, moving, refining, warming.
And it is meant to live in us.
Not just visit us on Sundays.
Not just flicker during worship.
Live in us.
š„ Ignition Requires Initiative
Hereās what the Lord showed me:
To light a match, you have to strike it.
A match will sit in a box its whole life if no one initiates the strike.
And a candle will never release its fragrance until itās lit.
And a candle will never release its fragrance until itās lit.
Some of you are waiting for fragrance in your home⦠but the wick has never been lit.
Potential without ignition is just stored power.
Initiative is the strike.
You donāt beg a match to burn.
You move it.
And when it ignites?
Warmth follows.
Light follows.
Atmosphere shifts.
But hereās the part we donāt always say:
You can own a whole box of matches and still live in the dark.
Because ignition requires movement.
The fire of God in our lives works the same way.
He fills us.
He equips us.
He places things inside of us.
But we still have to move.
We still have to respond.
We still have to strike the match of obedience.
Not striving.
Not forcing.
Just initiating what He already placed inside.
But fire must be ignited.
And ignition requires initiative.
(And no, weāre not playing with spiritual matches carelessly ā¦weāre stewarding what He lit.)
But fire must be ignited.
And ignition requires initiative.
Cass Moments (Because This Is Real Life)
Now let me bring this home.
I love to celebrate big.
I use holidays, birthdays Ā even random Tuesdays ā¦as opportunities to connect deeply and create intentional moments. (If thereās an excuse to light candles, Iām probably taking it. š)
But there were years I waited.
Waited for romance.
Waited for the candlelight dinner.
Waited to feel pursued.
Waited for someone else to make the moment magical.
And when it didnāt happen the way I imagined?
Disappointment.
Frustration.
That quiet internal shutdown.
You know the one.
The āIām fineā that is absolutely not fine.
Letās call it what it was.
Passivity dressed up as hurt.
I was waiting for someone else to carry the emotional weight of something that mattered to me.
Until one day the Holy Spirit confronted me ā¦gently, but clearly:
āYouāre waiting on romance.
Who told you that you couldnāt initiate it?ā
That question exposed something in me.
I wasnāt powerless.
I was passive.
And passivity will quietly rob a marriage of warmth.
(It doesnāt start cold. It just slowly lowers the temperature.)
So I had to shift.
Not just my house ⦠my heart.
I had to prepare.
Freshen up the room.
Make it cozy.
Light the candles.
Purchase the outfit.
Make the playlist.
(Yes, the playlist matters. Atmosphere is spiritual. š)
But more than that ā I had to prepare my heart for intimacy.
Release expectations.
Let go of resentment.
Decide to give what I was hoping to receive.
Love takes initiative.
Warmth is built.
And intimacy doesnāt flourish where both people are waiting.
When I stopped waiting and started initiating ā¦planning, communicating, setting the tone ..
everything shifted.
Not because he suddenly became someone different.
Because I did.
Turns out, sometimes the spark youāre waiting for⦠is the one in your own hand.
Initiative Is Relational
And this isnāt just about marriage.
Initiative is relational fire.
Hereās what that can look like:
With Your Children
- Planning one-on-one time instead of waiting for them to ask
- Starting the hard conversation first
- Apologizing when youāre wrong
- Creating traditions that build connection
- Praying over them out loud instead of silently hoping
You set the temperature.
With Your Parents (As Adults)
- Calling first
- Asking questions about their lives
- Bridging awkwardness instead of avoiding it
- Saying āI appreciate youā while you still can
Initiative builds honor.
With Friends
- Sending the text
- Planning the dinner
- Following up
- Saying, āLetās fix thisā instead of letting distance grow
Initiative protects connection.
(Itās amazing what one brave text can repair.)
In Kingdom Work
- Raising your hand
- Volunteering before youāre asked
- Offering your gift instead of waiting to be discovered
- Starting the prayer
- Taking responsibility for the atmosphere
Initiative partners with heaven.
Heaven responds to movement.
In Your Church
- Greeting first
- Inviting someone to sit with you
- Joining the team
- Starting the culture you wish existed
Warmth in a church rarely happens by accident.
Someone always struck the match.
In Your Own Life
This one changed me.
Stop waiting to be chosen.
Choose.
Stop waiting to be celebrated.
Create celebration.
Stop waiting to be invited.
Step forward.
You are not overlooked.
You are under-ignited. Initiative is faith refusing to live cold.
The Core of It All
When we take initiative, we partner with the fire of God.
And when that fire is present, warmth follows.
Peace overrides pride.
Joy interrupts irritability.
Connection replaces cold silence.
You donāt have to wait for someone else to bring warmth into your home.
You can carry it.
And you donāt have to set the whole house on fire. Just strike the match.
Prophetic Invitation
If youāve been waiting in the shadowsā¦
The Lord is not asking you to strive.
Heās inviting you to move.
There are things burning in your heart that require initiative.
You donāt have to be loud.
You donāt have to be forceful.
But you do have to move.
When faith moves,
warmth follows.
Prayer
Father,
Break timidity.
Break passivity.
Break the belief that we must wait to be chosen.
Teach us to move when You nudge us.
Teach us to create warmth in our homes.
Teach us to initiate connection, honor, and joy.
Let Your fire in us release warmth around us.
Not reactive.
Not resentful.
But intentional.
Alive.
In Jesusā name,
Amen.
Letās Say it Loud
I will not wait in the shadows.
There is fire and warmth ā¦in my initiative.
Ā
YOUR MOVE
Light the candle.
Send the text.
Make the plan.
Strike the match.
Not just for a holiday.
For life.
